leishmaniasis

When it gets evening in the south, when dusk comes and nothing against a drink at the pool would be, not only people enjoy the balmy summer nights. Sand or butterfly mosquitoes also set off to take a sip. Her special cocktail: Human blood. It's stupid that the pests can transmit unicellular parasites, the Leishmania.

The development of the Orient bulge

An infection with Leishmania can cause leishmaniasis. The name of the disease and the causative group goes back to the Scottish tropical doctor and pathologist William Leishman, who discovered and described the disease named after him at the beginning of the last century. This causes a slight redness at the injection site, which later forms a swelling that grows over several weeks. This dry "bump" is painless and usually heals after several months, but leaves a scar. As the infection progresses over a longer period of time, the immune response of the body also increases during the duration of the infection, so that a continuous infection leaves a lifelong immunity.

In addition to the dry cutaneous form, there is also a wet Hautleishmaniosse, in which a weeping ulcer is in the foreground. The disease and healing process is similar to dry leishmaniasis. Around twelve million people suffer from leishmaniasis each year, around 60, 000 of them die of the rarer form of visceral leishmaniasis (visceral: internal organs). The more common forms are skin leishmaniasis (cutaneous leishmaniasis).

Leishmaniasis: symptoms later

More complicated is mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. In this disease, it also leads to a puncture in the skin with the development of the typical bump, but after the initial infection - and sometimes up to 30 years later - the parasites infect the lymphoid and blood vessels of the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, lips and larynx.

The first signs are nosebleeds or a nasal obstruction after initial infection. The pathogens can also infiltrate and destroy the nasal septum: the affected patient then develops a so-called "tapirase", in which the nose has collapsed. The disintegration of the tissue often leads to further infections and mutilations. This form of leishmaniasis must definitely be treated with medication.
